i was playing golf today, albeit not in the beautiful setting portayed in the photo (at my local track) and i was paired with a threesome of very nice fellows, as the round proceeded i came to enjoy their company and wondered what these three fellows had in common...all of them were in their fifties or close to that age and all had retired! i won't even be able to sniff retirement at their age and at my current age of 42 i wonder if i'll ever retire at all...
two of them had made their fortunes during the start-up tech craze during the 90's and the other was a commercial real estate appraiser...as a dentist i seem to have amassed nothing more than a ass full of debt, student loans, practice loan, capital expenditures at the office for equipment, as well as inheriting a hard working, yet overly-complacent and highly compensated staff from my father's healthy practice...i really have no room to complain, yet when meeting these guys on a friday morning i felt like the odd man out in many ways...
the take home messages are many, keep your head down and work your ass off to achieve (maybe a fraction) of their success, try not to think about how far the retirement 'place' will be....and maybe most importantly...NEVER play golf on days when only the idle play...which means i'll be teeing it up (rarely) on the weekends when the idle retired guys would never be caught DEAD playing...
